At Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, Trang Campus, the Institute of Natural Resources and Environment, led by Associate Professor Dr. Prasert Thongnunui, Director of the Institute, along with Dr. Pimworang Sukkanun and Dr. Chayada Nusaen, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya, Nakhon Si Thammarat Campus, in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University, represented by Associate Professor Dr. Nantarika Chanseu, Director of the Marine Animal Disease Research Center, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (VES) Hospital Singapore, represented by Dr. Paola Unda Marron, Emergency Veterinarian, Emergency and Critical Care Department at Singapore’s largest specialized and emergency hospital, along with the staff from the Andaman Lower Marine Resources Research Center, have been involved in the treatment of the young dugong at the Rajamangala Trang Marine Animal Hospital.
On August 13, 2024, the specialized veterinary team conducted a thorough examination of the dugong’s left eye, which showed cloudiness, as well as blood tests and X-rays to monitor its condition and plan detailed treatment. Currently, the young dugong has shown improvement after receiving close assistance from all involved staff. It has started swimming and balancing better, with reduced stress levels, though it still faces issues with abnormal buoyancy. The staff will continue to monitor the condition closely.
